The “Request Entity Too Large” (413) error will occur when the request file size exceeds the maximum size of the client request body set in nginx by the client_max_body_size directive.
Both Nginx and PHP should be configured to allow upload sizes.
By editing nginx.conf you can fix this issue.
Using the ssh client, open a terminal or log into a remote server. To edit nginx.conf, follow the commands below using any text editor. You need to use the nano text editor, and it must be run as root.
vi /etc/nginx/nginx.conf
sudo nano /etc/nginx/nginx.conf
vi /usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf
To increase the size limit, add the below lines to the http, server, or location context. Here client body size is set to 2M, which means the maximum accepted body size of the client request is set to 2M using the client_max_body_size directive.
client_max_body_size 2M;
The client will get an error “Request Entity Too Large” (413) when the file size exceeds the given client_max_body_size.
Then save and close the file.
To reload the nginx web server, follow the below code,
/usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -s reload
To reload use nginx itself
/sbin/nginx -s reload
Try the below code for RHEL/CentOS/Debian/Ubuntu Linux
service nginx reload
Run the below code if you are using a systemd based system:
sudo systemctl reload nginx.service
Besides this, the php installation can also limit uploading file size. Set the following directives by editing php.ini,
memory_limit = 32M
You can also set the maximum size of file,
upload_max_filesize = 2M
To upload large files, you need to set post_max_size, which means the allowed maximum size of post data, and that should be greater than upload_max_filesize
post_max_size = 3M
You can restart it by using the following command if you are using php-fpm
sudo systemctl restart php-fpm
OR
$ sudo systemctl restart php7.0-fpm.service
OR
$ sudo /usr/local/etc/rc.d/php-fpm restart
Save and close the file. As per your setup, reload/restart the back-end apache or nginx web server
Other than these two, please check for file permission errors too.
To fix this, you need to set up the correct permissions using the chmod command or chown command:
sudo chown -R lighttpd:lighttpd /var/cache/lighttpd/
There are some other actions you can take to troubleshoot and maybe fix the issue if you’re having problems downloading huge files in Odoo:
Verify the server’s resources: To handle massive file downloads, make sure your server has enough CPU, memory, and disc space. Insufficient server resources may cause downloads that are slow or fail. Keep an eye on the server’s performance indicators, and if required, think about upgrading it.
In order to allow for lengthier download periods, increase the timeout settings in Odoo. Odoo has a maximum timeout for requests by default, which might not be enough for huge files. To extend the timeout period, you can change the timeout parameter in your server settings or your Odoo configuration file.
Enhance database performance: Downloading large files might tax the database. Regularly purge extraneous data, index pertinent tables, and optimize queries to increase database speed. This may accelerate file downloads more generally.
Consider using an external file storage solution, such as Amazon S3 or a content delivery network (CDN), to keep huge files. The file serving process is delegated from your Odoo server, which helps speed up downloads. Set up Odoo such that it uses the external storage device for huge files.
Enable caching: In order to enhance Odoo’s performance for frequent file downloads, caching methods should be implemented. By delivering files from cache memory rather than periodically requesting them from the database or storage system, caching can lessen the burden on the server. You can employ caching strategies like reverse proxy caching or browser caching.
Configure your web server’s configuration parameters to enhance file downloads (for example, Nginx or Apache). You can enable compression to speed up downloads, for instance, or increase the maximum file size restriction. For instructions on optimizing settings, refer to your web server’s documentation.
Test with several file formats: If you are having trouble with a particular file format, try downloading files in various other formats to see if the issue is format-specific. Certain file types could need extra settings or behave differently in Odoo.

Update Odoo: Ensure that you are running the most recent version of Odoo. Updates from developers are regularly made available and may include performance enhancements, bug fixes, and optimizations. If the downloading problem is a known issue that has been fixed in later editions, upgrading to the most recent version might fix it.
