How to Manage Cross Docking in Odoo 18 Inventory | Odoo 18 Inventory Tutorials | Odoo 18 Tutorials – CBMS Odoo ERP

Cross-docking is a logistics practice that involves unloading materials from incoming transport and loading them directly onto outbound transport with minimal or no storage in between. In Odoo 18 (or similar versions), cross-docking can be implemented through the Inventory and Purchase modules with proper configuration.

Here’s a guide on how to set up and use cross-docking in Odoo:

Step 1: Enable Cross-Docking
Activate Multi-Step Routes:

Go to Inventory — Configuration — Settings.
Enable Multi-Step Routes under the Warehouse section.
Click Save.
Enable Cross-Docking Location:

Navigate to Inventory — Configuration — Locations.
Create a new location or edit an existing one.
Set the Type as Transit Location and name it (e.g., “Cross-Dock Zone”).
Save the location.
Step 2: Configure Cross-Docking Routes
Define a New Route:

Go to Inventory — Configuration — Routes.
Click Create and define a new route, such as “Cross-Dock Route.”
Set Rules for the Route:

Add a Pull Rule:
Action: Move.
Source Location: Suppliers.
Destination Location: Cross-Dock Zone.
Add another Pull Rule:
Action: Move.
Source Location: Cross-Dock Zone.
Destination Location: Output (or final shipping location).
Assign the Route to Products or Operations:

Assign this route to specific products, product categories, or warehouses where cross-docking is required.
Step 3: Configure Products for Cross-Docking
Go to Inventory — Products — Products.
Select the product that requires cross-docking.
Under the Inventory tab, assign the cross-docking route to the product.
Step 4: Test Cross-Docking Process
Create a Purchase Order:

Go to Purchase — Orders — Purchase Orders.
Create a purchase order for the product with the supplier.
Receive the Product:

When the product is received, it will be moved to the “Cross-Dock Zone” instead of a storage location.
Ship the Product Out:

A delivery order will automatically be created for the product in the cross-dock zone.
Validate the delivery order to complete the cross-docking process.
