Odoo allows you to manage and track the expiry dates of perishable products. This helps in reducing product loss due to unexpected expiry and ensures you don’t sell expired items to customers. However, this functionality is only available for products tracked using lots or serial numbers.
Here’s what you need to know about expiry dates in Odoo:
Enabling Expiry Dates:
Go to the Inventory app.
Click on Configuration Settings.
Scroll down to the Traceability section.
Enable Lots & Serial Numbers.
A new option for Expiration Dates will appear. Check this box and Save the changes.
Setting Expiry Dates for Products:
Open the product you want to manage expiry dates for.
Go to the Inventory tab.
Under Traceability, select either By Lots or By Unique Serial Number.
An Expiration Date field will appear. Set the expiry date for each lot or serial number.
Odoo Offers Different Expiry Date Options:
Expiration Time: Number of days before the product becomes dangerous and shouldn’t be consumed.
Alert Time: Days before an alert is raised for an expiring lot/serial number.
Best Before Time: Date before the product’s quality starts to decline.
Removal Time: Date after which the product should be removed from sale.
Additional Features:
You can display expiry dates and lot/serial numbers on delivery slips and invoices.
Odoo can generate automated alerts for expiring products
Expiry dates offer a variety of advantages across different contexts, ranging from consumer safety and product quality to business efficiency and environmental impact. Here are some key benefits:
Consumer Safety:
Prevents consumption of spoiled products: This is the most critical advantage, especially for perishable items like food and medicine. Consuming expired goods can lead to foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, or even serious health problems. Expiry dates help consumers make informed choices and avoid potential health risks.
Ensures product effectiveness: Some products, like medications or cosmetics, lose their potency over time. Expiry dates indicate the timeframe within which the product is expected to perform optimally and deliver its intended benefits.
Product Quality:
Maintains peak quality: Many products degrade in quality over time, losing their freshness, flavor, or effectiveness. Expiry dates inform consumers about the window during which the product will be at its best, allowing them to enjoy it at its optimal state.
Reduces waste: When consumers understand expiry dates, they are less likely to purchase products they won’t use before they expire, leading to less food waste and reduced environmental impact.
